THEME
The theme of the exhibition is empathy, compassion and non violence.
With so many stories in the media about family violence, abuse and bullying, we often feel powerless to bring about change. Empathy helps dissolve the borders that separate people, that allow one group to deem another group or individual to be less human. Empathy helps us to understand difference and recognise that our emotions are universal – that we’re all connected.
This year's exhibition title comes from the Roots of Empathy educational organisation, which works in schools all over the world to help children learn to respond effectively to the needs of others in gentle, loving ways, especially where there is conflict. Their program is proven to significantly reduce bullying and aggression, and results in children learning how to express their emotions and resolve conflicts effectively.
We hope the exhibition theme (and the Roots of Empathy's work), will inspire you to consider what empathy means to you and express it in your artwork for the exhibition.
